旧时把注解古书的文字叫注或叫传（zhuàn），解释注、传的文字叫疏。疏（旧读shù）。

注文和疏解的合称。对于文章或书籍正文做解释的文字称为注,或注解、注释,对某些典籍、古文献做注始于汉代。先秦是我国学术昌盛的第一个重要时期,流传下来大批典籍、文献,但由于语言的发展,文字的变迁,史料的缺遗和分散,汉代人已很难读懂,从而一些学者专门为这些古书做注解。注解又有传、笺、章句等名称。传,有转授、相承师说的意思,一般指阐明经义;笺,是说明作者的用心,或断以己意;章句,指分析正文的章节句逗;它们是各有不同角度的。及至唐代,许多汉人的注解也已不易理解。于是产生了新的注解形式,即注解者既注解正文,也注解前人的注解,也就是总的加以疏通,这种注解称为“疏”,也称“正义”,如《周礼》有汉郑玄注,唐贾公彦疏;《尚书》有汉孔安国传,唐孔颖达正义等。宋以前注和疏是分别印行的,后来则合为一本书,一般的排列是先注后疏,合称注疏。 汉代学者主要是注解经书,后世历代学者对许多重要古籍均从事了注解工作,注解的内容、范围、体例也日益扩展和完善,如所注的范围有词语的音义,来源;引文、典故的出处;人名、地名、年代、方位和史实的考证;以及划分段落,串讲大意等等。注解的方式又有夹注、脚注、篇末注等等。
