汉语字音可以分成声母、韵母、字调三部分。一个字起头的音叫声母，其余的音叫韵母，字音的高低升降叫字调。例如“报（bào）告（gào）、丰（fēng）收（shōu）”的b，g，f，sh是声母；“报”和“告”的ao，“丰”的eng，“收”的ou是韵母；“报”和“告”的字调都是去声，“丰”和“收”都是阴平。大部分字的声母是辅音声母，只有小部分的字拿元音起头（就是直接拿韵母起头），它的声母叫“零声母”，如“爱”（ài）、“鹅”（é）、“藕”（ǒu）等字。
