也叫卜辞、契文。 商周时代在龟甲兽骨上所刻的文字。出土于河南安阳小屯村殷代都城遗址，1899年始被发现。商周王室常用龟甲兽骨占卜吉凶，并将占卜之辞和相关的事情刻写其上。现收集到的单字总数在4 500个以上，能识读的不到一半。甲骨文是目前发现的最早的成系统的汉字。

殷 人用龟甲、兽骨占卜，并将占卜之内容用当时书体刻在甲骨之卜兆旁。这种文字距今已三千多年，被称为甲骨文。 清 末发现于 河南 安阳 。1899年 王懿荣 认定为 殷商 文字，从事收集。经 清 末及近现代学者相继研究，已成为一个独立的学科。至今发现的甲骨有十万片以上，文字约四千五百个，为学者所识者有三分之一。其基本字形结构与后世汉字相一致，是汉字的较早书体。 郭沫若 《今昔集·论古代社会》：“ 殷 代尚相当原始，对于鬼神有深厚的信仰。逢到一件事情，就卜兆问神，更将卜问所得，书刻在牛胛骨上或龟甲上，故称甲骨文。甲骨文和公文一样，有一定的格式。内容大概是祭事、田猎、风雨、战争、疾病之类。”
