古汉语四声的第四声。普通话没有入声，古入声字分别读成阴平（如“屋、出”）、阳平（如“国、直”）、上声（如“铁、北”）、去声（如“客、绿”）。有些方言有入声，入声字发音一般比较短促，有时还带辅音韵尾。

入声是古汉语的四声之一，平仄中的三个仄调之一。入声韵尾由三种不同的塞音韵尾[-p̚],[-t̚],[-k̚]构成。入声字读音短促，一发即收。入声字音是无声除阻音，是有成阻和持阻阶段，但最后没有爆发的塞音。“平声者哀而妄，上声者厉而举，去声者清而远，入声者直而促。”入声在汉语的保留情况及表现形式各不相同。入声在粤语、闽南语、海南话、客家语、部分赣语，完整保存韵尾三分[-p̚],[-t̚],[-k̚]。大部分赣语保留两种韵尾[-t̚]和[-k̚]。在吴语、大部分江淮官话、徽语、晋语、闽东语、莆仙语和极少数西南官话中合并为喉塞韵尾[-ʔ]。在部分江淮官话、闽中语、新湘语、闽北语中保留独立调值。日语将入声的痕迹保存至今，但其韵尾已独立成另一个音节。相比，韩语、越南语入声字的发音，更接近现代南方汉语的发音。现代官话（除江淮官话）的特征之一是古汉语的入声消失。以失去入声的官话（包括普通话）为母语者，不经训练不能分辨入声字。由于部分原属仄声的入声字被派进平声，所以官话使用者较难判断唐诗宋词中的平仄韵律。 官话各方言入声消失的进程并不一致，总体来说，是先归并，再变成喉塞音[ʔ]，后喉塞音脱落，最后并入其他调。这一过程始于唐宋间的燕云十六州，元朝官话已无入声。入声未随南宋灭亡而消失，至今仍广泛存在于南方各方言（除绝大部分西南官话）和北方晋语中。
